After Auschwitz, America and the world saw the horror of anti-Semitism. Jews thought that beast had been finally slaughtered. It hadn’t. It just hid. Jews forgot what lurked below the surface. The more that secular Jews assimilated, the more “American” they believed themselves to be, the more they ignored what was happening. Soon, many saw themselves as neutrals, looking at Jewish survival in America, Israel and around the world from a detached perspective. The problem is that the world would not let them detach.
