After World War II, America’s status as the superpower gradually led to the infantilizing of Western Europe. Why would you have to develop a military if the burden of defending Europe rested on the United States? It is tragic that the development of an integrated European military command came about as a result of a breakdown of values in the United States, but there is no reason why Europe should not bear the bulk of the cost of its own defense.
