Allow me to offer a friendly amendment. While it is clear that earlier generations were taught a selectively edited history, every written history is by definition selective, since not every experience of every person can be put to paper. What America strives for is to create “a more perfect Union…” Taken over the long haul, we have progressed. Blacks, other POCs, women, religious and sexual minorities-all are treated better today than in the past. Are we perfect? No. But unless your broadened view of history is not joined with what I consider a justifiably optimistic view of American progress and of the chances for greater progress, then all that will result will be a demoralized society. We should know we have more to do-but our children must learn to celebrate what we have accomplished already.
