Have you considered three possibilities? One-Elizabeth is a brilliant sociopath. Two-Elizabeth is sleeping with the boss-the one who ran interference for her when she was caught cheating. Three-both possibilities are true. In any event, you describe a truly toxic environment. If you try to change Ph.D programs before you get your degree, considering how far along you are, authorities at your prospective new program would ask questions you would not want to answer. It is not as if you were married, your spouse got a great job far away and and had to move to a different state to stay with him. Unless it becomes impossible for you to get your degree where you are, just bear down, get the degree and get out. Unfortunately, I am not sure just how honorable other programs are. What amazes me most is that important people would risk being associated with fraud in a context where the fraud, once ascertained, could be absolutely proven.
