Having your experiences after Portugal made things worse, I am sure. I visited Portugal for the first time last year. It was an incredibly hospitable place. But remember that Portugal is a small country. Tourists make up a substantial share of who is in the country at any given time. I believe that tourism is one of Portugal’s largest industries. I do not say this to diminish their sense of hospitality. Fortunately for tourists, their friendliness is magnified by the financial benefit tourism brings.
I visited Portugal just after visiting Spain. Spain is similar to Israel in one respect. Both countries have a robust tourism industry-but they both have a modern industrial economy in which tourism, while important, is not central. I found the Spanish to be friendly and hospitable-as I found Israelis to be.
Rest up, replenish your travel fund, and visit Israel again. Might I also suggest that you consult toursbylocals.com. My family and friends have used them. You might find a good guide to help avoid problems.
Best wishes!
