I have two responses:
- If that interview took place in the United States, I sure hope you notified the local or federal civil rights offices-or the Department of Justice. What the interviewer said was not only vile, but also, in the US, unlawful.
- A person or entity may respond to a claim of unfair hiring practices with pointing to one representative of the subject group and saying: “See! We have one of those!” What I have seen in all of the organizations to which I have belonged and studied, hiring one member of a group is desegregation. Integration requires having multiple individuals.
