The United States has been given a deadline of August 31 to complete the withdrawal of all American and allied military forces as well as American and Western personnel and Afghan allies. It was just announced (8/24/21, approximately 12:30 P.M.) that the United States intends to respect this deadline.
It would appear to be the consensus of virtually every commentator in all print media and on every network that it is not possible to extract all of those people from Afghanistan in seven days. Many of these people are in Kabul but still cannot get to the airport. Others are in other cities or even remote areas and may be in danger as soon as they leave their current location.
I truly hope that the U.S. will be able to negotiate a resolution to this problem by securing an additional fifteen or thirty days to complete the mission. If we are able to do so, the worst part of the self-inflicted debacle of this policy of withdrawal will be avoided.
