Perhaps the only guarantee is that, even if Trump leaves office voluntarily or not, Pence will not be removed. For one thing, he still has friends in Congress from when he served there, and they will say Trump overbore his will. More important is that removing Trump and Pence means, under the law governing presidential succession, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi becomes president. While I would love that, I don’t think the country-even many who despise Trump-want a change of parties through a non-electoral maneuver such as impeachment. If there were an interval, allowing a President Pence to get Mitt Romney confirmed as Vice-President, then Pence could resign in a bargain to prevent prosecution when he leaves office. In any event, this speculation is getting way over my skis. I will be happy if we can remove Trump. Remember, the day Nixon left office, two-thirds of Republicans still backed him. Trump has over 85% of the GOP still supporting him.
