The incident with the press secretary actually has two parts. If the customers in the restaurant had expressed their views to her-even if loudly and repeatedly-that might be acceptable. The problem was, in essence, denying service in what is a public accommodation. There was no lawful basis for doing so. It may have felt good to the owner. It was an unjustified denial of rights.
