There were certainly a number of men who entered the military in wartime for other than patriotic motives. I know of people who were given the choice of jail or the army. But I would suggest another explanation for much of our problem. Science and technology have eliminated the need for most hard physical labor. A young man who grew up in the last 50 years expecting a career in manual labor-or even most skilled trades-was dreaming. Unless we create large capital projects on a continuous basis, the energies of non-academic young people will go into unproductive endeavors. As the old saying goes, idle hands are the Devil’s workshop.
