While Gov. Cuomo was no doubt just trying to minimize the threat to public health that a primary election would have necessitated-and also to save the state some money-the judge was absolutely right in rejecting a summary termination of the right to elect candidates on the ballot. Your health concerns were valid. I share them-and, as a result, resigned my position as judge of election. Mail-in ballots are only a partial answer. If some people do not exercise that option and want to vote in person, there will be fewer voting places, longer lines and greater exposure to health risks for both voters and election workers alike. The only answer for elections this spring and summer is mail-in-ballot-only elections.
