You posit a false dichotomy. You do not have to choose between an extravaganza planned out over a year with a six-figure budget or a domestic partnership. You could have gotten a license, gone to a Justice of the Peace and gotten married. I suggest the choice you made grew out of your parents’ failed marriage and your partner’s earlier divorce. That does not make your choice wrong. It makes your choice one of many.
